Do you postpone things ? Then read this
When I was growing up, I remember reading a two line poetry by a very well renowned Saint, Saint Kabir and still remember that. In English it means " Do it now what you want to do today and do it today what you want to do tomorrow because tomorrow never comes and you never know what is going to happen in next moment.
But, it doesn't stand totally practical all the time in our lives when we see how many people apply this in real lives. Do you agree with me on that ?
Well, studies say that on an average 85% postpone their tasks, or 'to do lists' and attempt to do them only when they become urgent. From another angle, if we look at it, 85% people do only those things all the time, which have become urgent and they can't avoid them any more. The most common are: returning your library dues, petrol tank filling, mobile recharges, paying bills and the list goes on and on.........and at work, we have heaps...oh man..
I am myself trying to overcome this habit of procrastinating things (also called postponing) but you know what, it is very tempting to postpone things / tasks. By putting things to be done later on gives you some so called 'spare time' which you use (or waste) in doing unproductive things like watching TV,surfing internet, sleeping or just sitting idle.
Sometimes, it works in your favor if you are doing it for productive purposes like doing high priorities things first and attending to low priorities later but it is also amazing to know that people also do postpone things because most of the time they do not want to come out of their comfort zones and doing them require some extra efforts, which they are not used to put.
Some of the most common reasons why people procrastinate are:
- People do not want to come out of their comfort zone;
- Fear of loss by attempting to do things, failure, fear of criticism etc;
- Faint focus, self distractions, urge to do unproductive things like net surfing.
If you want to stand up against your unproductive procrastination habits and control your temptation to do unproductive things over your priorities, all you need is to delay your unproductive desires for few more minutes and you will be amazed to see that you have conquered it once ! And all you need to do is to repeat this every time you have cravings to postpone something.
You got to be proactive. Even Stephen Covey puts "Be Proactive" as the first habit as highly effective out of his famous Seven Habits.
If it is an unknown fear inside, remember that the fear inside can also forces you to take one step closer to the success if you have courage.Courage is not working against your fears but it is working inspite of your fears.
Think about it. All you need to do is ACTION.
Please express your views on this. Please also tell if you have some ideas to avoid procrastinating. I would love to have your feedback on this.
Have a good weekend ahead.

Good one, I agree with you, when you start working and stop delaying the task, it will finish soon and then you will have lovely time for your self and your family.....

Absolutely true Vikas. In today's demanding and challenging time, I believe if there is something challenging at all then it is spending time for yourself and your family. Both should always come first as priorities.
ReplyDeleteInteresting insight. I wish u elaborated more on the controlling the temptation of doing unproductive things.
ReplyDeleteTo put my two cents in this discussion, I have observed that when I fall for unproductive temptations during the day, I feel very unsatisfied, self-critical, and low on self confidence at the end of the day. Doing wht u meant to do, is very important for your self-confidence.
thanks for sharing ur thoughts.
hi,
ReplyDeleteI also procrastinate things often. But when we delay or postpone something at time its a great relief for us. But as we reach nearer to the deadline it becomes awful and would sometimes affect our efficacy. Action in hinduism is called karma. we only have to do our action with endeavor.
